One of the first automotive applications of the OM636 diesel engine was its use in the 170D built between 1949 and 1955. It was the first mass-produced sedan by Mercedes-Benz after WW2 and helped establish its renown as a world-class manufacturer. With a definite pre-war look, the 170D was originally built using a wooden-framed body on a tubular chassis. In 1953 the all-steel 170SD was introduced and continued to use the 1.77 litre OM636 diesel. Although the 40HP produced by the engine would not allow high speed driving (60 mph was the top speed), fuel economy was legendary with figures of 46 miles per imperial gallon (38 miles per US gallon) being reported.
